Halloween is right around the corner, so it’s time to start preparing! In addition to decorating the house, picking out a costume, and buying trick-or-treating candy, you also need to prepare your child’s smile. As you may have already guessed, Halloween isn’t the smile’s favorite holiday, but that doesn’t have to be the case for your child’s smile if you start preparing now. To help you, our dentist, Dr. Carolyn B. Walker, DDS, has some tips.

First, make sure your child takes very good care of their smile by keeping up on oral hygiene. This should include brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste twice a day, flossing once a day, and rinsing the mouth with antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash daily. These things can strengthen your child’s chompers and keep them as well as the gums in tip-top shape, just in time for Halloween!

Second, bring your child into our office for their dental checkup if they are due for one (they need a checkup every six months). This appointment will help them have a strong and healthy smile for Halloween, especially because the treatments strengthen and deeply clean the teeth as well as detect or treat any dental issues. This can help your child reduce the risks of developing or worsening dental problems on Halloween.

Third, teach your child about the ways candy can affect the smile. Tell them how it can weaken the tooth enamel and promote the development of cavities. Then, explain why this is the reason you will limit their candy consumption after they come home with their bag full of candy. This will help lessen the shock when you don’t let them eat all their candy at once.
